ARCHITECTURE...
We have strong opinions regarding the architecture of any site.
Generally, we tend to be very practical. When a
generic method can be used that supports all browsers without
wasting time extracting every last bell and whistle, that will be our choice.
None of our sites ever test for the browser type or version and use
proprietary features of that browser. Given the variety of monitor sizes,
video card variables, and screen resolutions, the less generic your site is
coded, the more calls you will get complaining that the site does not
look right.
We do not get carried away with the technology, as the purpose of
a web site is to satisfy the specific needs of the customer. Usually,
the only reason for overly complex sites is to add complexity to the project.
We prefer to concentrate on a good design, simply executed. The rest of the time should
be spent optimizing the content of the site for the search engines that should account
for the majority of your traffic.
For a great introduction to the basic concepts of site usability, go to the
site of the renowned expert, Jakob Nielsen, http://useit.com.
While we agree with most customers that sites must be a bit more graphical than he lets on,
his well-researched opinions are valuable.
